PHOEBE RINGS DELIVER NEW TRACK ‘GET UP’
Fresh from two sold out shows with The Beths in Naarm/Melb and Gadigal Land/Sydney last week, Tāmaki Makaurau/Auckland dream-pop quartet Phoebe Rings - who were dubbed an "indie supergroup" by RNZ given its members' involvement in other notable NZ projects such as Tiny Ruins, AC Freazy, Princess Chelsea, Fazerdaze and Lucky Boy - today share the disco-inspired new single 'Get Up' lifted their incoming debut album Aseurai (Jun 6) alongside its video; stream/watch 'Get Up' HERE; Aseurai (LP) is out Jun 6 via Carpark Records, pre-save HERE.
'Get Up' follows the lead dual-singles 'Aseurai' & 'Drifting' released early March - that have seen support and acclaim from Pitchfork, Happy Mag (Best Music), Rolling Stone, Northern Transmissions, SYN FM's Sweet Sixteen, 13th Floor Song of the Day, plus adds to Spotify Fresh Finds AU&NZ - and features bassist Benjamin Locke singing lead for the first time on a Phoebe Rings song. On 'Get Up', Locke says, “This was written in a period where I was listening to a lot of disco, particularly Nile Rodgers productions (Chic, Sister Sledge). Around a similar time I rewatched The Matrix. In the opening scene, Trinity is being chased by agents and says to herself ‘Get up Trinity, just get up.’ I thought the notion of willing yourself to get up could be interesting to play around with and that scene stuck with me for a bit. In older disco tracks there is often this imperative language (‘Everybody Dance!,’ ‘Leave your cares behind’) - ‘Get up, just get up’ just kind of fell into place. We gave it a pretty comprehensive disco treatment with lots of strings, bvs and a searing Arp solo.”
